On Friday December 7th at 10:00, Asher Roth and White Panda rocked the crowd in Alumni Hall. I went with my all of my room mates in supplemental. The concert was free and you didn't need a ticket. The only thing you needed was your id card to show that you were a Penn State student. First we went to Walmart and bought glow sticks and bright colored shirts to wear. Everyone was holding or wearing them when we got there. The lights were flashing bright colors. There were at least 700 people there. On the stage, there was DJ equipment, belonging to Wreckineyez, everywhere all glossy and organized. We were not in the very front but we were more towards it than the back. People were pushing and shoving before the concert started but I was taking in the atmosphere so i didn't mind.
           Wreckineyez started out taking the show over, he was mixing stuff on turn tables and grinding out sounds that made the crowd roar. The lights and the commotion was all so much to take in. It feels like the music is flowing through you.
           When Wreckineyez started playing "We are the Champions" that it when Asher Roth came out on stage. He is most famous for his hit song "I Love College", which was written after a visit to Penn State believe it or not. He opened his set with "Bastermating" I am pretty sure which set the tone for the night. Everyone was jumping and singing to the lyrics. The lights were flashing and the music was turned up loud.
           Asher jumped into the crowd and then when he was back on he invited two people up to sing with him. I wish i were in the front for that! Then at one point there were people crowd surfing and my friends and I heard that a girl was dropped from like 8 feet in the air and then stomped on. We heard she is okay though thank goodness. After that he performed "I Love College" which had everyone screaming and jumping. 

          

  Unfortunately we left after Asher performed and didnt get to see White Panda. It was a really fun time and I am really glad that I went. There are more concerts coming up like Lady GaGa that I am also hoping to go to!!
           

Something fun and artsy that I took part in was making a crayon heart. That is what my room mate, Emily, calls it anyway. We made it together one evening. Its not that hard to make but it requires a lot of patience. 

First, we got a big white poster board. You can have any color you want but we thought the colors would contrast if we used just a blank one. Then we sketched a perfectly shaped heart right in the center. You have to make it so that when the crayons bleed there is room for the melted wax to spread. So you cant make it to big or too little. 

After that, we lined up the crayons in order according to the rainbow in opposite directions. Starting at the top going toward your left we started with red and then at the bottom going left we started with red again to get a reversed rainbow look. We got glued the crayons down on to the board lining the bottom of the crayons up with the sketched heart.

Once you have all the crayons lined perfectly you take a hair dryer (girls probably have more of an easy access to one of these) and you start at one of the red crayons. We started at the bottom red crayon going to the left. You have to make sure that the hair dryer is tilted at the right angle so that the wax doesn't bleed into each other. At first the wax will run and be hot, switch the hair dryer to cool air to speed up the cooling and running.

Continue the whole way to the top and you are finished! :)
There are different variations that you can make with this, you could finish the whole heart, use different colors, or even a different poster board color. Its really up to you!

       As the semester comes to a close, I look back and think about all the things that i have learned and accomplished. I learned how to bring rhetoric into action. I learned to look deeper into the arguments of writings, movies, and the world around us. Everything is an argument ready to be examined. I also learned how to bring my point to the center of attention in a more direct way. English was always my strong suit over mathematics or sciences, but I still was never really good with it either. English 015S helped me realize that Penn State has a ton more art and rhetoric than most people would think. There were blogs and pod casts that were talking about it being the number one party school. I am not ashamed to say that i did not even know that. 

       For me, it is never hard think of subjects or topics to write about, it is just hard to get them on to paper the way I want them to. Like when you picture yourself drawing a masterpiece and you picture the finished product in your head but once you make the first mark on the page, you realize that it is so much harder to take things from your brain to the page. This english class has taught me how to do that a little better. I enjoyed the enthusiasm that was brought to class from everyone because it adds to the atmosphere helping me feel at ease and welcome to share opinions. 

       Something else that i have gained more knowledge on is the way to look at the world. You see papers and magazines everywhere, pictures and books, even movies and tv shows. There are always arguments. Whoever wrote or created the things that they did had a reason behind it. It is fun to think about all the reason why.

       I look at myself before, coming into english class from high school, where most of the things we learned about were authors and citations and looking at peoples work in order not to steal it, and then now where we are actually looking at peoples work to find the reasons why they did what they did. It is more creative and i find it personally more refreshing and easier to deal with.

          When it comes to writing essays, I am not the greatest I will be honest. Once again it is hard for me to strategically order the paragraphs in ways that are easy to follow and that the audience wants to stay tuned. I have got a better understanding of how to word things so not to confuse the reader. One thing that I especially took away from the class was that you do not have to use big words to impress anyone. I sometimes used to try and sound more educated so that I would gain some ethos, but in my attempts to sound more studious, I probably confused people more than anything else.

          I enjoyed English 015, it taught me a lot of liberal arts tips that I am sure I will be needing in the future.

  In the show In The Red and Brown Water, the main character was Oya who was trying to find her place in the projects. She was in love with another important character Shango who was trouble and never fully committed to her before he then left and joined the military. Ogun Size was in love with Oya and when Shango left, he swept her off her feet. Elegba was a trouble maker and was a neighbor of Oya. Oya wants  to have a baby desperately. After her Aunt Elegua made her feel a certain way, she tried even harder with Ogun. Oya was going crazy sitting around watching all of her friends get pregnant and have children. Shango came back into the picture and started having an affair with Oya, but soon after, Shango got Shun pregnant and that sent Oya off the edge. She cut her ear off and i think died at the end.

          I think the most important part in the play was when Elegba had his son. It is important to me because he is younger than Oya and he has been around Oya for most of his life. Oya wants to have a baby so when Elegba doesnt have anywhere to go, she takes him in so she can have a baby too in a way. She doesnt ever have a baby even though she desires it greatly. I’m sure it made her feel bad that she couldn’t have a baby even more. I felt bad for Ogun because he was trying really hard to do everything he could to provide for Oya, but she was just wanted  to sulk in her own misery. That is, until she divorced him and set him free.

       The acting and singing was extremely good, but the most compelling aspect to the performance would hands down have to be the mood. When you can feel the emotions that are trying to be portrayed while you sit in the audience, it adds immensely. During the dancing scenes, especially the one in church, I felt myself smiling and moving with the music. I don't think i have anything to critic however, I felt like towards the end, the play drug on for a tad bit too long. It felt like it got old after a while. The ending was weird too. She cut her ear off because he always used to "caress it". It was interesting but weird at the same time.

       This was not my first time seeing a live performance. I did like this one and I am a big fan of plays and musicals live or not. The one main difference that i noticed, and I'm sure it was just because of the way it was written, but the characters spoke the things that should have been in parenthesis. It added comedy and I liked it. The music in this one was more alive it seemed than others that  I have encountered in the past.

                                              

     "We’re. We’re going streaking!" Will Farrell, one of the star actors in the 2003 movie of Old School, screams as he runs down the middle of the street naked. Along with his co-stars Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn, they try to relive their rambunctious college years by jumping through hoops trying to re-opening a fraternity house on campus for everyone from college students, to senior citizens.   

     This comedy starts off right away with many witty jokes and humorous innuendos. Many families should watch however on whom they are letting view this film, for they have homophobic references along with other inappropriate scenes and dialogue. This is not something that younger kids should be watching, due to the fact that they may not be mature enough to see the content of the film. It’s pretty evident that the audience for this film is college kids, and adults. Since the movie is based off the lives of college kids, it is where the majority of the movie takes place.

This movie aired in 2003. Critics gave it four stars. In 2006 a sequel was written by Scot Armstrong. However, it was turned down by stars Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn. They felt that even though it had comical aspects to it, that it was just a repeat of the original film.

Old School won many awards in 2003, including the best casting for feature film, best Comedic Performance, best on screen team, and believe it or not in 2004 they won; best fire stunt. This movie had not only grabbed the attention of audiences that enjoy comedy, but also the director and producers’ job in creating a well- structured film. Will Farrell is by far the funniest actor in my opinion. No matter what the movie, if he is starring in it, I am down to watch. “Good luck to everybody. Nice to know you all and I'll see you around campus.”

    I thought the arboretum was very fun. On one boring afternoon i was going to take my friend Caroline there, but we went to the creamery instead because it started to rain. It was full of lush wildlife and lots of flowers and plants that I could take pictures of. There was just an atmosphere of serenity that surrounded the place and filled it with pleasure and excitement. Every time I tried to leave there was something that always caught my eye at the very last moment that made me stay just a few moments longer. I got pictures of sunflowers and pretty orange flowers too. 

            My favorite thing about the garden was that It was so big. I would maybe get lost in it, but it would make it a fun adventure. I could easily spend a whole afternoon taking pictures and posting them to Instagram. I personally am a nature lover. I like being outdoors. It is very enjoyable for me to sit outside and smell the flowers and air all around me. 

   When if first got to the Arboretum, I was lost. It was really confusing and I didnt know where to look. I was following a path that was not leading me in the right direction. Then I cut across a huge field and made my way over to where the rest of the class was. When I got there, at first, I still was not impressed yet. As i was told to go check the place out, that is when the fun began. It was almost immediate. I turned the corner an saw the most amazing blue and pink flowers. They were the first ones i saw. They were so florescent and bright that it was impossible to miss. I kept walking and saw a patch of sunflowers which reminded me of home because my mother planted sunflowers in our garden when i was little and they are still there. As I kept walking more and more plants just flashed out and caught my eyes. Some of them I had never seen before, others just looked better than they ever could. Even though I was walking with my classmates, i felt like nobody needed to talk. Occasionally there would be the mumble of how much someone liked a particular plant, but for the most part for my group, it was just a peaceful stroll through a beautiful place. 

     When I was a little girl, my grandma would take me to this place called Linden Hall. It was an all girls private school, but on the weekends nobody was there. She would take me to the back of the school where there was a huge pond with cherry blossom trees and horses. Linden Hall also had a garden. It was nowhere near as extensive and full of variety as the Arboretum, but it was elegant in its own way. It was so beautiful in every season of the year. The Arboretum reminded me of Linden Hall and i will most certainly go back.

Grey Horizontal

The piece in which I found most interesting would be the one done by Will Barnet with oil on canvas in 1961. This piece was named Grey Horizontal. This painting depicted a woman who looked like the guardian or care taker for the little girl beside her in the picture. The older women looked as though she was sneering over something she had just done to the little girl or told the little girl to do. By the expression on the older woman’s face, it seemed like she was gloating. The little girl was not looking straight forward. She was holding a cat in her lap and seemed to be looking at the ground with shame or some sort of upsetting feeling. All three of the images are positioned on a grey piece of furniture, which seems to capture the mood perfectly.

The year of 1961 seemed to be gloomy. There were wars on the verge of breaking out, the Soviets split East and West Berlin, people trying to test and promote integration measures (Freedom Riders ), and there was just a mass of seriousness among the world at that time. In Grey Horizontal the woman and the little girl are white in skin color. This most likely means that their lives, maybe not the best, were better than the everybody else's lives around this time. Although there are no outstanding aspects to the piece that can converse with the time period, I would not doubt the significance in the gaze on the faces of the two females.

Pathos is shown pretty big in this painting. The little girls fixed stare on the ground makes us feel as though she has gotten in trouble for something. It is apparent that the women beside her is in charge as she lay casually on the grey furniture with a gloating expression. I value discipline and obedience to my elders. If the little girl did in fact do something wrong then I feel it was right for her to be scolded or put on punishment.

The ethos is a little bit harder to grasp but some background info on the artist gives a more clear answer. The artist was born in 1911 in America. He is well-known for his paintings of people and animals in watercolor or even in dreamlike worlds. He studied at the Art Students League of New York with Stuart Davis (another famous artist). He worked really hard and eventually became the official printer  for the Art Students League.

Grey Horizontal to me, is claiming that kids are inferior to their elders. I would agree with this claim in most cases. It might also be claiming in itself the power of color. There is basically just different shades of brown and grey in this piece and yet the contrast in them is compelling.

My experience at the Palmer museum was very nice, it being my first time there. I was very fascinated with the fancy art, like the chinese dynasty statue and all the glassy ones, and also ones that looked like they were used for cooking and cleaning in like a tribe. I would go back there just to see things that I am sure I missed. It was a lot to take in all at once, in a good way.

Mad love means "lots of love" in teenage terms, sorta!
